Scanning Usage in U.S. Continues to Grow
According to a study by the International Data Corporation (IDC), scanning use in the United States continues to accelerate. The study, “Document Intensive Business Processes and Scanning 2008,” points out that 52% of all respondents indicated that they have increased their scanning use over the past two years; 57% of all respondents expect scanning usage to further increase over the next two years.
The research was designed to uncover specific scanning opportunities within key document-intensive industries. The industries researched include:
- Banking
- Insurance
- Manufacturing
- Health care
- Retail/wholesale
- Legal
- Education
- Government
The results were based on survey data from end user, IT, and facilities/operations/purchasing respondents. Other findings revealed in the IDC report include:
- While all industries have experienced and project increased scanning activity, legal, manufacturing, insurance, banks and government stand out with the highest percentage of respondents indicating an increase in scanning activity over the past two years as well as expected increase in volumes over the next two years.
- Making information more accessible is the most often mentioned scanning benefit across all industries. In fact, its percentage increased significantly over other key benefits (reduced time/costs, increased productivity) since the last study on the topic.
- Three business processes stand out in greatest need of automation where scanning can be used to digitize the processes: purchasing/billing/invoicing, HR documentation, documents created and/or managed by knowledge workers
- Content management software remains the highest mentioned repository for scans.
